Sterling Heights, MI (Thursday, December 12, 2019) - The 52nd Running of the Snowball Derby is now in the books. Plenty of excitement was to be found throughout the weekend, but for most of the Michigan contingent that made the trip, it was rather quiet. Nunica, Michigan’s Johnny VanDoorn, who most thought could make some noise at the Derby following his very successful 2019 season, just couldn’t find the speed needed in his #71 machine, and couldn’t make it out of the Last Chance Qualifier. Tim Curry of Allegan, MI, also couldn’t find the speed needed and was unable to transfer.
Portage, Michigan’s Carson Hocevar probably saw the most excitement over the weekend, as he was entered in both the Pro Late Model and Super Late Model classes. Hocevar had been at the top of the speed charts in his Pro Late Model, but could only bring home a 24th place finish in the Snowflake 100. The peak of Hocevar’s excitement came in the Last Chance Qualifier for the Snowball Derby, when he was involved in a late race incident with Rich Bickle and Harrison Burton, while fighting for a transfer spot. The incident proved costly for Hocevar, who finished 6th - two positions short of transferring into the Snowball Derby.
In other action, Birch Run’s Dan Leeck, who closed out his 2019 JEGS/CRA All Stars Tour season and his 2nd championship with a solid run at Winchester, would bring home a respectable 12th place finish in the Snowflake 100. Trevor McCoy (Caledonia, MI.) also made the trip to Pensacola, and took home a 17th place finish in the Snowflake.
The teams will now head back north to work on their winter plans. The next extended opportunity for any of these drivers to head back to the State of Florida and try their luck, will be in February for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, at New Smyrna Speedway during Speedweeks.
