Sterling Heights, MI (Monday, May 11, 2020) - Another weekend of social distancing style racing is in the books from various race tracks across the country. For Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois though, it was another weekend watching on a TV, or traveling a long distance to enjoy motorsports. That includes Michigan natives, Steve Dorer and Rusty Schlenk - both of whom have made their homes in other parts of the country, but have seen first hand how racing could return to the Mitten State.
For Dorer, the Coldwater native, he spends his Fall, Winter, and early Spring time in
Florida, racing his Pro and Super Template Late Model while building, selling and servicing his Race Car Engineering brand. Likewise, Dorer is also responsible for the Brandon Ford Wheel Man Sportsman Series which races all across the state of Florida. The series returned to action on Saturday, May 9th from 4-17 Speedway, with strict social distancing rules that, if not followed, could have resulted in on track penalties for the teams and their drivers. Dorer discusses how the event went, what the process looked like the get the event off the ground, and what's to come for he and the Wheel Man series in the future.
Also on Saturday, Schlenk a former Jackson, Michigan resident, left his McClure, Ohio home to head for Federated Auto Parts Speedway at I-55 in Pevely, Missouri. Earlier in the week, Schlenk voiced his displeasure for the fact that racing hasn't resumed closer to home, while expressing that he doesn't mind traveling. Schlenk, who nearly pulled off a top five finish before a mechanical problem ended his night, discusses how the event, which featured a 700 spectator limit crowd, was held and what it looked and felt like from the racers perspective.
Plus, Zach Hiser and Rich Frantz discusses the numouros other events that were held with guidelines that included no fans and fan limits at events such as the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series, Touring Outlaw Modifieds and more.
