Horsepower Happenings Speedweeks 411 - Week 2, Saturday

Sterling Heights, MI (Saturday, February 15, 2020) - With 10 laps remaining in Friday’s 100-lap Pro Late Model finale at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway, three drivers found themselves in a tiebreaker for the With 10 laps to go, there was a three-way tie for the points lead between Skinner, Jett Noland and Connor Mosack. While Skinner and Nolan had confrontations early in the week, Skinner wanted nothing more than to pass Noland cleanly for the win. He did exactly that with nine laps to go, passing Noland for the win and the championship. Ultimately, Skinner won the title by just two points over Mosack, equivalent to one position on track. Noland slipped back to third, while Mosack finished fifth.

After a week of podium finishes at New Smyrna Speedway, Matt Hirschman broke through on the biggest stage Friday night during the Richie Evans Memorial 100. The driver known as "Big Money" shined when the lights were the brightest, dominating the most prestigious race of the five-day event and capturing the 2020 Tour-type Modified championship during the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. Tyler Rypkema and Craig Lutz would complete the podium.

Entering Friday night’s USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship season opener, the most recent time Brady Bacon left Bubba Raceway Park with a top-five finish was three years ago. Bacon rid himself of the early-season cloud of recent years by taking the lead with just four laps remaining to score his third career Winter Dirt Games feature victory. With the triumph, Bacon became just the 13th driver to reach the 30-win mark in his USAC National Sprint Car career. Kyle Cummins, C.J. Leary, Justin Grant, and Chris Windom would round out the top 5.

For never having won a Feature at Volusia Speedway Park in his previous 49 starts before his win on Thursday night, Jimmy Owens made going back-to-back on Friday night look easy as he led 24 of 40 laps in the Feature en route to his 17th career victory with the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series. The O-Show certainly was good, backing up his first-ever victory at the DIRTcar Nationals presented by Bozard Ford with his second in two days, fending off a relentless Mark Whitener in the early going, then going on to survive several restarts in the late stages to collect $10,000 for his efforts.

Lightning Larry Wight, from Phoenix, NY, joined elite company in the record books by winning his third DIRTcar Nationals presented by Bozard Ford Feature win in a row. Only Brett Hearn and Kenny Brightbill have won three or more consecutive races at Volusia Speedway Park in Super DIRTcar Series competition. Wight’s first 2 wins this week came from the outside pole position but tonight the No. 99L started seventh with 6 very fast Big Block Modifieds in his way. Tonight Volusia Speedway Park will wrap up the 2020 DIRTcar National presented by Bozark Ford. Don’t miss it as they will crown the 2020 DIRTcar Nationals Big Gator Champion!
