Sterling Heights, MI (Friday, June 5, 2020) - Another weekend of racing is upon fans of Northern Michigan’s Merritt Speedway. The third week of the season and fourth show overall is a full 7-in-1 program featuring a $2,000 to win main event for DIRTcar UMP Late Models and a special $500 to win main event for Pro Stocks. DIRTcar UMP Modifieds, B-Mods, Factory Stocks, 4 & 6 Cylinders and Mini Wedges are also on the card for the June 6th program.
An exciting season has already unfolded for the Late Models at Merritt Speedway, who have seen three different winners in two weeks of action. Going back to the Memorial Day weekend double-header, Chad Finley dominated the race grabbing the first win of the season ahead of Travis Stemler and Brandon Thirlby. The next night, McClure, Ohio’s Rusty Schlenk used his front row starting spot to go to Allstar Performance Lane Automotive Victory Lane. Just one week ago, Cody Bauer became the third different winner claiming his first career Late Model win; he bested Dona Marcoullier and Eric Spangler for the win.
The B-Modifieds have had a thrilling start to the season as well with Traverse City, Michigan’s Collin Thirlby sweeping the opening weekend before being involved in an early evening crash last week. The incident parked Thirlby for the night, giving a host of other drivers a shot at the win. By the time it was over last week, Lowell, Michigan’s Gary Vandermark had taken his number 10 machine to the point and got the win ahead of Benten Deyoung and Austin Wonch.
The Factory Stocks had their special last week racing for an increased $500 to win main event. Nearly 40 drivers from across the state invaded Lake City for a shot at the prize. At the end of the 20 lap Feature Event, Timmy Near of Midland, Michigan ended up in victory lane ahead of Brendan Powell and Bryan Cook.
This Saturday’s events are the final for Merritt Speedway as the exclusive home to auto racing in the Mitten State. According to Owner/Promoter Mike Blackmer, his Tri-City Speedway will open on Friday, June 12th for the first race of the Lane Automotive-Allstar Performance Tri-City/Merritt Speedway Challenge Series Supported by American Ethanol.
Pit gates open Saturday at 2:00pm with the first event of the evening at 4:00pm for the Mini Wedges. The rest of the racing program gets underway at 6:00pm. Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets ahead of time at www.merrittspeedwaymi.com, and are reminded that coolers are not permitted and social distancing standards continue to be enforced.
