New Wall and Fence Debuts April 25th with Motor City 200 Event
Sterling Heights, MI (Wednesday, March 25, 2020) - In a time of uncertainty in our lives, and cancellations occurring through the motorsports community, some positive news is coming out of one of Michigan’s historic tracks. Flat Rock Speedway is in the process of completing a major upgrade at the southeast Michigan bullring. Replacement of the retaining wall in turns one and two was completed back in December. Now that March has arrived, replacement of the catch fence in the same section of the track has begun.
Flat Rock Speedway General Manager, Scott Schultz spoke to the Horsepower Happenings team about the upgrades, which have been in the works for several years. “We had been looking at the turn 1-2 wall project for the past 2-3 years, and it was time to pull the trigger and start this improvement,” said Schultz.
Schultz also said the upgrades are part of a laid out course of action for the facility. “Ron Drager is always looking at upgrading the track and the physical plant itself. He’s really been ahead of the curve...It’s his life, his family’s life, since 1962 at Flat Rock,” finished Schultz.
Also scheduled for an upgrade before the season starts is the Public Address System in the pit area and a crack filling project on the racing surface. Facility improvements such as these are just another example of growth in short track racing - and the speedway has plans for 2021 as well.
“The next project we are planning on [is] adding another small set of bleachers in the pit area on the east (turn 1) end,” said Schultz.
All of the 2020 improvements are expected to be completed by the end of March. The scheduled season opener at Flat Rock is the Motor City 200 on Saturday April 25. The event will see the first ever appearance for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour, and the Victory Custom Trailers CRA Junior Late Model Series. In addition, Modifieds will be making their first appearance at Flat Rock since 2007.
